Sometimes, a situation is just so upsetting, that all you can do is pull from it a few small positives. Such is the case tonight. I am choosing to ignore the fact that my beloved Penguins lost 6 – 2 to Vancouver. Instead, I will walk away from this game with two bright points. Shockingly, they’re both Russian. (ahem, sarcasm)
First of all, Evgeni Malkin FINALLY found the back of the net after going 11 games without. It was beautiful as well. Leave it to Geno to break out in style, reminding everyone of the rockstar he is.
Secondly, Pens Nation got formally introduced to Alexander Pechursky. Now, I have no idea why, but I tend to get feelings about backup goaltenders. Like, ESP feelings. I remember being in attendance for Andy Chiodo’s first game as a backup, and turning to my friend, and saying… “We’re going to see him play tonight, unfortunately”. And we did. Then, last season, right around Thanksgiving, I was sitting a few seats away from John Curry, as he sat in the stands at Nassau Coliseum as a backup. Before heading to the game, I texted a Curry-loving friend, and said “Your John Curry is going in tonight, you’d better be watching.” And, he did.
So, earlier today, when I first learned Alex Pechursky would be backing up Curry for tonight’s game, I just got ‘that feeling’. I just knew this kid was about to lose his NHL virginity.
As much as I didn’t want to think of the reasons he would be forced to enter the game, either injury to Curry, or poor performance, I just kinda knew it.
But, we’re looking at the positives here, remember?
You all got to witness the first Russian to play goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Everyone was all about Pechursky tonight. Poor kid had his name spelled wrong on his jersey, had the wrong number on his jersey, was using MAF’s pads, and went in without a real shot. But he played well all things considered.

Even though Alex hardly stood a chance at a victory, maybe our efforts were not for naught; he was named 3rd star of the game and the adorable kid didn’t even know what to do.
Everyone around me scoffed when he was brought in. They were like “who is this guy?”.. He stunned MANY canucks fans with a few beauty saves. The circumstances under which he made his debute were unfortunate, but he held his own for the time he was between the pipes… Got a lot a supportive cheers and a standing O when he was named 3rd star.
