Comparing Shero’s New And Old So Far This Pre-season.

Monday, September 27th, 2010

With most of the team played 3 or 4 games this preseason i’d like to take a brief look at the new players Shero signed this year and players he let go. First lets take a look at the Pens new players.

Zbynek Michalek

Zbynek Michalek – First game 1 assist, 6 blocked shots, and 3 shots on goal with a total of 22:48 time on ice. 2nd game did not play. 3rd game no goal no assist, 4 shots on goal and 5 blocked shots with 21:34 TOI.
Totals: 0 goals, 1 assist, 7 shots, 11 blocked shots in 2 games. Read more here.

Mike Comrie

Mike Comrie – 1 goal and 7 shots on goal with a total a total of 17:48 time on ice. 2nd game 1 goal and 8 shots on goal, 16:15 TOI. 3rd game did not play.
Totals: 2 goals, 0 assists, 15 shots on goals in 2 games.

Arron Asham

Arron Asham – 1st game didnt play. 2nd game 1 goal and 2 shots on goal, 12:29 TOI. 3rd game 1 goal 1 assist 2 shots on goal and 12:50 TOI.
Totals: 2 goals, 1 assist, 4 shots on goal in 2 games.

Paul Martin – 1st game did not play. Second game no goals no assists, 1 shot on goal and 1 blocked shot with total time of 21:30 on ice. 3rd game did not play.
Totals: 1 shot on goal 1 blocked shot.

Next lets take a look at a few players Pens lost this season. The most prominent figure believe it or not turns out to be Ruslan Fedotenko who is fighting for a roster spot with New York Rangers.

Ruslan Fedotenko

NY Rangers – Ruslan Fedotenko first game tied for higest 6 shots on goal. Second game Fedotenko scored game tying goal which eventually lead Rangers to win in OT. He also registered 2 assist, one of which was a complete thing of beatuy, and 2 shots on goal. 3rd game he did not play and Rangers lost.
Totals: 1 goal, 2 assists, 8 shots on goal in 2 games.

Alexei Ponikarovsky

LA Kings – Alexei Ponikarovsky – first game he had 1 assist. Second game scored the only unassisted goal for LA. 3rd game he did not play and Kings lost.
Totals: 1 goal, 1 assist in 2 games.

Bill Guerin

Phil Flyers – Bill Guerin – Survived the first roster cuts and still fighting for his spot. Flyers first game didnt play. 2nd game Bill Guering scored one unassisted goal in the 2nd period and one goal in the shootout. Interestingly enough Luca Caputi had two assists on both Leafs goals and a shootout goal as well.  3rd game Guerin did not play. In the forth game Bill Guerin did nothing other than put 2 shots on goals in his 14:34 time on ice.
Totals: 1 goal in 2 games.

Sergei Gonchar

Ottawa Senators – Sergei Gonchar – So far Gonchar played in only 1 game out of 4 this pre-season. During his one game Gonchar registered 1 assist in his 24:25 total time on ice.
Totals: 1 assist in 1 game.

Leaving you with something sweet to suck on till tomorrows game against Chicago Blackhawks at 7:00 pm. Can the current Stanley Cup champions put an end to Pens 3-0 streak this pre-season or will they get beat up by no other than our own sex hair Kris Letang … and maybe Geno! ROFL!!!

Marc-Andre Fleury Likes U-Boat Watches

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

If you know me personally then you probably know i am a watch enthusiast. You know what they say a nice watch is real man’s jewelry. Not that fake-ass-shit-gangsta-wanna-be bling. Anyway, you might remember a while back i posted a picture of Sidney Crosby sporting a white dial Rolex Daytona which runs about $12,000. Well, recently i came across some pics of Marc Andre Fleury wearing a watch. The pics were good enough for a positive id. Here are the pics of the MONSTER watch MAF is wearing.

Marc Andre Fleury U-Boat Watch

Marc Andre Fleury U-Boat Watch

Turns out this is a U-Boat watch, an Italian made brand. More specifically U-Boat Men’s Classico automatic watch. Automatic watch simply means that it doesn’t require a batter unlike quartz watches. Automatic watches are mechanical watches but unlike regular mechanical watch where you wind them up by hand these watches gets wound automatically when you move you hand. Despite being made in Italy this watch uses an impressive Swiss made world famous ETA movement. Its a huge watch that runs about 53 mm in width. To give you something to compare it to the usual Rolex Submariner watches are about 41 mm in diameter. The retail price of this watch is about $2,600 but street value i would estimate around $1,500. Here are some better pics of the watch.

U-Boat Watch

U-Boat Watch Back

Edit: With a name like U-Boat one might think that this watch is good enough for diving in the ocean and sinking German cruiser ships. Unfortunately with a water resistance rating of 100m the only recommend diving for this watch most likely be done in your bathtub or a sink.

NHL Catalog came today … guess what?! No news on getting jersey with the new Consol Energy patch. BOOOOooo! However, it did have some other interesting pictures …

Someone is being overly optimistic this season …

Apparently Justin Bieber is Blackhawks fan …

Good thing KHL has no fights i mean you guys might all remember Vityaz Chekhov vs Avangard Omsk post i did a while back that involved Jagr and some relentless fights of the two KHL teams. Well apparently they are back at it again!  http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/409761 (Russian) – scroll down for the videos tho.

Pens win 5-1 and HBO Can Suck It!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

@pghpenguins Penguins To Co-Star In HBO Reality Show Series ’24/7 Penguins Capitals’ In December: http://bit.ly/aeXKN6
@pghpenguins Penguins reduce training camp roster by 15 players: http://bit.ly/bVY2b4

HBO Show!? That should be exciting! I mean we need to hype up Winter Classic game! Yeah make NHL more popular and mainstream in America! I mean paying close to a thousand dollars a ticket is just not enough! I mean having season tickets sellout in mere seconds is still not enough! If we could get it down to milliseconds. I am not complaining though as long as HBO promises to have shots of Evgeni Malkin walking around the locker room all wet in nothing more than a towel or even less.

Pens win first pre-season game at home 5-1. Game was not televised so i can’t comment much on the game. However, Brooks Orpik knee hit on Franzen apparently was enough to have Pens trend nationally on twitter. Discipline action? I think not! Brooks is just not that type of player to intentionally do anything like that. Franzen and Wings should stop crying and look at the bright side of things …

By the way Zbynek Michalek had 6 block shots … ahh and there is still 5 more years of this. Solid pick. Orpik-Michalek pair is going to be unreal. Crosby left game early with sore hip flexor. However he is “OK” now according to this http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=538378&navid=DL|PIT|home

My buddy Jared was at the game, probably snapping pics you see above. Here is his unreal pass.

American Eagle Student Rush at CEC … check this dude in unreal Jagr jersey sitting on the steps texting his granny about how much he loves her. What a kid!

Next Game tomorrow against Blue Jackets at 7:00pm.

Its A Great Day For Hockey!

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

… when the players leave the locker room and head to the runway to pick up their sticks, the last thing they will see before taking the ice is ‘Badger’ Bob Johnson’s popular message: “It’s A Great Day For Hockey!” http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=538220

Today is a great day for hockey indeed! First pre-season game is tonight! Not only its a first game of the season its a first game at the new arena! Some big names are playing including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury,Brooks Orpik, Eric Tangradi, Zbynek Michalek and Kris Letang. Projected lines for tonight based on morning practice are:

Sterling-Crosby-Dupuis
Tangradi-Comrie-Malkin
Wallace-Letestu-Kennedy
Craig-Vitale-Boulerice

Orpik-Michalek
Letang-Strait
Potter-Hutchinson

Brett Sterling, the hero of Monday’s scrimmage with two goals, will get a shot playing alongside Sidney Crosby. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=538278

Seth from EN has a great article/interview about Zbynek Michalek. Worth the read especially considering he is Czech.

… Michalek, who keeps alive a streak of 20 consecutive seasons of the Penguins employing Czech players … The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most popular teams in the Czech Republic. Especially because of (Jaromir) Jagr, (Martin) Straka and those guys.

Rob Rossi posted this pic of MAF helmet and provided update on Mario Lemieux’s statue.

… statue of Lemieux that I’m told will be unveiled Dec. 27 — the 10-year anniversary of his historic comeback from retirement. I’m told the pose used for that statue is one from the 1990-91 season, but that it is not the one from him splitting the defense in Game 2 of the Cup Final that year — arguably the most famous of Lemieux’s many highlight goals.

Evgeni Malkin, who was working the left point along side with Letang on PP practice this morning, provided some words of wisdom for tonights game …

“It’s Detroit,” Malkin said. “I don’t know who’s going to play for Detroit Wednesday, which good players, but we just need to win the first game in front of the fans for the fans. It’s an awesome building, [seating] 18,000. I hope the fans enjoy the game. We work together.” Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10265/1089337-61.stm#ixzz10HRwmuLN

Funny fact that Center forward Evgeni Malkin was moved to a wing this season. One of his “good” friends Ovechkin was moved to a center, left wing Ilya Kovalchuk will now be playing on the right. http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/409389 (Russian)

Pens Practice Camp Pics – Penguins Cakes – Ringtone

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Well kids the practice camp is over and the first pre-season game is tomorrow against Red Wing! WTF?! I know what happened to the summer? Although i have been busy trying to raise Pittsburgh’s local economy by producing a new website for Ansys corporation, with the new hockey season almost here i expect to pick up the regularity of posts here. Vacation is over its time to get to work. First i’d like to thank Janet A. (one of my favorite Malkin stalkers) for forwarding me her pictures from the Practice camp. Check out the pictures of Jumbotron. That thing is a freaking monster! Its kind of funny if you go to the game now and you have somewhat lower quality camera you better off taking pictures of whats going on on the jumbotron rather than actual ice. Bizarre!

Janet would also like to share the following info so you can come and support everyone who is affected by this.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness sponsors VisionWalk

On the topic of personal struggles I am really glad that Tangradi (even tho he is from Philly) had a really successful camp this year, not that there is a lack in Penguins defensive lineup, but  him overcoming a rash of injuries which started back in 2009. I think this kid has a bright future. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=538015

Since the new season is almost here you might want to think about stocking up with some new merch so you can cheer for Pens in style. If you are like me an out of state fan then you probably have hard time finding Pens merch in your local sporting goods stores. Well worry not because the internet makes everything possible. Here are some of my favorite places to shop. Keep in mind that i wouldn’t recommend anything unless i personally ordered from them and tried their merch.

So of course there is the Official Penguins Store. http://shop.nhl.com/category/index.jsp?categoryId=3253875 You can find a lot of latest and new merch there. By the way if you are going to buy a Penguins jersey i recommend getting it here. There are tons of other places on the net where you can buy a jersey but none of them can guarantee the authenticity of the jersey. With Chinese economy booming they have saturated the internet with their “fake” or as they like to call it “replica” jerseys. Believe me their quality control sucks so its always a gamble when you buy a jersey from China.  Don’t throw away your money and support Chinese economy! Buy your jersey from official NHL online store. Only downside is if you buy replica jersey at official NHL online store and get it customized with your or players number and name well then its going to be heat pressed … and … this … really … sucks. So instead i would recommend getting plain jersey and then getting it customized elsewhere. I haven’t tried this place but i read great reviews and heard good things about http://www.icejerseys.com where for about $54 to $79 bucks you can get your jersey customized with everything stitched to the jersey not glued! With proper care this jersey will last you for many years to come!

For other types of Pens accessories and signed memorabilia i like to head over to http://bigflysports.com and http://www.fansedge.com. Two great stores.

Now i am a fan of unlicensed merch if it comes from Pittsburgh because one way or another it still  supports the city of Pittsburgh home of Pens. I recently discovered http://www.believemerch.com/ and fell in love with Geno Is My Homeboy t-shirt! I had to get it along with Belive Bylsma t-shirt. When i got them i was pleasantly surprised with the quality of actual shirt, the designs and quality of screen prints. These t-shirts are hot hot hot!

If you are penguin, i mean the bird, lover like me well then you might also enjoy http://www.penguin-place.com. This place has anything penguins merchandise. Check out what i also found there … 1996 Ice Time Magazine with Ron Francis on the cover for only $1.95! Mind blown!

I was bored out of my mind one day and was browsing Pens Multimedia section and stumbled upon Penguins Theme Song – Boys of Winter ringtone that you can download from myxer.com and pay $1.99 for it. So i decided to make my own. Same one and you can download it for free here.  http://penshead.com/mp3/PensRing.mp3 … you are welcome.

I’ll be in Pittsburgh for the first two games of the season celebrating MouthFullOfTang’s birthday. In her honor i’d like to post some of these awesome Penguins birthday cakes i found on this awesome website http://www.cakecentral.com thanks to @ApresLaMusique! In a grizzly tone: “YUMMMMY!”

Evgeni Malkin: I’m Too Sexy For My Hair

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Official Penguins twitter (@pghpenguins) reported today that “…Malkin taping promos for TSN at the NHL media tour in New York City”. A twitpic was attached showing Geno sporting racing stripes shaved in his hair. This was followed by @FriedmanHNIC Holy 1989. Evgeni Malkin at NHL shoot with small racing stripes shaved in his hair. “Just fun,” he said.

Dont let Geno’s “Just fun” comments fool you. Our physics experts report that Geno’s new hair cut makes him much more air dynamic. In fact computer simulations showed a 40% burst speed increase on breakaways making Malkin close to unstoppable.

“I am too sexy for my hair, too sexy for my hair … sooo sexy it hurts!”

Notice also new patch on Geno’s right shoulder. I believe this is the patch Pens will wear this season.

“Playing Hockey Is A Little Bit More Difficult Than Doing Commentary.” – Evgeni Malkin

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Not many of you might know that during offseason in NHL Evgeni Malkin was invited to be commentator during opening MHL game. Apparently Geno did pretty well and there was an interesting article posted about it on SovSport.ru. Since i thought this article was worthy of translating then so it shall be done.

“Thats it?! I would do more” – Evgeni Malkin’s Debut On TV As A Commentator

Opening game for junior league was sold out. However, those that stayed home to watch the game did not regret it. This action filled game was presented by three experts. Stanly Cup winner Evgeni Malkin who joined along side with Alexander Tkachev and Sergei Gimaevu. With words Malkin played just as good as with a puck.

Malkin? Lets Talk

A few minutes before live broadcast, interview with sportscaster from TV channel “Russia 2″, Alexander Tkachev.

- Its no deja vu, but an interesting fact – reporter is sharing. – Exactly one year ago joined-commentary was shared with Alex Ovechkin as we opened first MHL season. This time its Malkin, i am sure it will be interesting!

A few minutes before first faceoff Evgeni Malkin appears in the press-center. Stylish black suit-jacket, crisp white shirt, light colored jeans, and a trademark smile.

- Good luck, Evgeni! - journalists wishes.

- Malkin nods. It seems that hockey player is no less nervous than during Stanley Cup finals. He almost makes a mistake of going into a wrong commentator booth - employee of Metallurg sports department assists to find the way.

- Good evening, fans of hockey, – without a quiver in his voice Malkin goes on the air. Right off sharing his first impressions: – Did you see how the teams played first symbolic face-off? It seemed like they thought it was the real thing. Interesting hockey lies ahead!

Philosopher and Joker

In the new role of Malkin is developing very quickly. This can be understood through a little trick, which TV viewers do not know.

Live broadcast actually comes with a delay of several seconds. It takes some time for the image from the stadium to reach TV screens. Thats why professional commentators use a special monitor to react to whats going on in the game.

“Goal!” – reacts to the fans in the stadium Evgeni Malkin after score is opened by Potehin.

Tkachev and Gimaev tactfully do not notice Evgeni’s mistake, because viewers only see scored goal a few moments later. After this incident Malkin does not repeat such future  “fortune telling”.

- I would compare Eugene Koreshkova, coach of “Steel Foxes” with coach of Pittsburgh Penguins Dan Bylsma, – by the middle of first period, Malkin stops being shy and takes matters into his own hands. – First, they have similar style of coaching. Secondly, both are still pretty young. Thirdly, both took their team to with the championships during their first season!

- Very interesting observation, – praises Sergei Gimaev. – Even philosophical!

-  Meanwhile, director of “SJSSOOR” (Specialized Junior Sport School Of Olympic Reserve) Metallurg, Sergey Vitman  joins the press-center. He immediately drew attention to the TV:

- Is that Malkin talking? I thought it was a professional expert. I didn’t expect this!

- We have a “BIG” commentators group today, – fully adopted to his new role Malkin is joking as if he heard his first mentor’s comments. – If you look at Sergei Nailevichem and I (both over 6’5 feet, 2 meters) then literally, BIG!

“Harder to play hockey!”

Malkin’s commentaries is the most discussed topic during the break. All the reporters share the same view that debut of Magnitogorsk’s star is a success.

- Its comfortable to work with Evgeni, – shares Alexander Tkachev. – Nice to talk to a man who perfectly understands hockey.

The closer the final siren, the more liberated Malkin becomes. In the third period he takes matters into his own hands: constantly jokes, shares issues with colleagues, breaks down certain plays on ice.

- That’s it? – smiling hockey player says after ending the broadcast. – I would do it again. I liked it a lot.

- Were you nervous at all? - reporters asking who circled around Malkin.

- At first i was a little uncomfortable. However, the confidence and support of Sergey Gimaeva and Alexander Tkachev helped me to get used to it. After that i didn’t have any issues.

- You seem to be completely overwhelmed with emotions.

- Yes its true. During opening ceremony i remembered when i was younger and used to play here. Too bad, back then we didn’t have such championships. This game is a huge celebration for everyone. Tremendous boost of energy!

- Have you ever announced a game before? In America, for example?

They are very creative there and also do similar stuff. However, i never had to sit that long in front of a microphone. Also native language made things a lot easier.

- Would you be able to do the same in English language?

- With similar colleagues, i think i would.

- So whats harder to do, to a commentator or hockey player?

- I think playing hockey is a little bit more difficult than doing commentary.

In other news … happy 32nd birthday to Matt Cooke!!!

Nice article posted by EN about transition from Mellon Arena to Consol Energy Center here.

Malkin flying back to USA tomorrow!

I am happy to report the game was a tie 13-13 and charity foundation from pure heart officially won! The money are donated towards kids who suffered from wildfires this summer. A noble thing to do!
