Pittsburgh Penguins: Ray Shero’s Moves Look Better As Players Fail Elsewhere Source: Bleacher Report
One of the questions that Penguins GM Ray Shero had to field most often this past summer was “Are you bringing Billy Guerin back?” Guerin had become a local folk hero of sorts in the Penguins march to the Stanley Cup in 2009 but was a free agent following last year’s early playoff exit. Shero never came out and said it in part because of the respect that Guerin had earned, but the team had moved on.Coaches and scouts had come to the conclusion that atage 39 Guerin was running on empty through the second half of last season and didn’t fit a team in real need of scoring from its wingers. Guerin spent the summer looking for work and agreed to a tryout with the Philadelphia Flyers . But the Pens judgment on him now seems spot on after he posted a single goal and was a horrid minus-four in a shellacking by the Buffalo Sabres the other night. This morning the Flyers released Guerin. Up in Toronto the guy who Pens fans worried most about losing got some bad news as well. Luca Caputi was shipped to the AHL this morning by the Toronto Maple Leafs . The former fourth round draft choice had been dealt north of the border at the trade deadline for winger Alexei Ponikarovsky who turned out to be one of the largest busts in Shero’s tenure. The big winger scored twice in 16 regular season games and only once in the playoffs for the Pens in 2010. So bad was his performance thatPonikarovsky spent most of the summer looking for work before landing in Los Angeles … The rest is here

Evgeni Malkin of Pittsburgh Penguins Ready to Avenge Previous Poor Season Source: Bleacher Report
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Penguins beat writer Rob Rossi released the following article after the Pittsburgh Penguins received a disappointing boot from the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 playoffs. Rossi ‘s note to GM Ray Shero to “field offers for [Evgeni] Malkin” brought forth many negative reactions, including a rebuttal from yours truly concerning Malkin’s invaluable worth to the team . Trading away one of the greatest talents in the league today would be both a foolish and brash decision, and the Penguins organization smartly disregarded Rossi ‘s opinion on one poor season from the young star … View post

Comparing Shero’s New And Old So Far This Pre-season.

Monday, September 27th, 2010

With most of the team played 3 or 4 games this preseason i’d like to take a brief look at the new players Shero signed this year and players he let go. First lets take a look at the Pens new players.

Zbynek Michalek

Zbynek Michalek – First game 1 assist, 6 blocked shots, and 3 shots on goal with a total of 22:48 time on ice. 2nd game did not play. 3rd game no goal no assist, 4 shots on goal and 5 blocked shots with 21:34 TOI.
Totals: 0 goals, 1 assist, 7 shots, 11 blocked shots in 2 games. Read more here.

Mike Comrie

Mike Comrie – 1 goal and 7 shots on goal with a total a total of 17:48 time on ice. 2nd game 1 goal and 8 shots on goal, 16:15 TOI. 3rd game did not play.
Totals: 2 goals, 0 assists, 15 shots on goals in 2 games.

Arron Asham

Arron Asham – 1st game didnt play. 2nd game 1 goal and 2 shots on goal, 12:29 TOI. 3rd game 1 goal 1 assist 2 shots on goal and 12:50 TOI.
Totals: 2 goals, 1 assist, 4 shots on goal in 2 games.

Paul Martin – 1st game did not play. Second game no goals no assists, 1 shot on goal and 1 blocked shot with total time of 21:30 on ice. 3rd game did not play.
Totals: 1 shot on goal 1 blocked shot.

Next lets take a look at a few players Pens lost this season. The most prominent figure believe it or not turns out to be Ruslan Fedotenko who is fighting for a roster spot with New York Rangers.

Ruslan Fedotenko

NY Rangers – Ruslan Fedotenko first game tied for higest 6 shots on goal. Second game Fedotenko scored game tying goal which eventually lead Rangers to win in OT. He also registered 2 assist, one of which was a complete thing of beatuy, and 2 shots on goal. 3rd game he did not play and Rangers lost.
Totals: 1 goal, 2 assists, 8 shots on goal in 2 games.

Alexei Ponikarovsky

LA Kings – Alexei Ponikarovsky – first game he had 1 assist. Second game scored the only unassisted goal for LA. 3rd game he did not play and Kings lost.
Totals: 1 goal, 1 assist in 2 games.

Bill Guerin

Phil Flyers – Bill Guerin – Survived the first roster cuts and still fighting for his spot. Flyers first game didnt play. 2nd game Bill Guering scored one unassisted goal in the 2nd period and one goal in the shootout. Interestingly enough Luca Caputi had two assists on both Leafs goals and a shootout goal as well.  3rd game Guerin did not play. In the forth game Bill Guerin did nothing other than put 2 shots on goals in his 14:34 time on ice.
Totals: 1 goal in 2 games.

Sergei Gonchar

Ottawa Senators – Sergei Gonchar – So far Gonchar played in only 1 game out of 4 this pre-season. During his one game Gonchar registered 1 assist in his 24:25 total time on ice.
Totals: 1 assist in 1 game.

Leaving you with something sweet to suck on till tomorrows game against Chicago Blackhawks at 7:00 pm. Can the current Stanley Cup champions put an end to Pens 3-0 streak this pre-season or will they get beat up by no other than our own sex hair Kris Letang … and maybe Geno! ROFL!!!

LETS GO PENS!!!

Pens Take Series Lead and Kris Letang’s Tattoo

Monday, April 19th, 2010

You better believe it … Pens game 5 playoff tickets went on sale TODAY! If you can’t afford tickets be sure to stop by Dick’s and grab a free playoff yard sign.

I am desperately trying to get one for Foley’s (Thanks to Lisa R who volunteered to send me one! What a lady!) especially since Pens flag that usually flies above the entrance fell off. Not being superstitious about it or anything but that kind of crap is simply unacceptable especially during playoffs. Tuesday i am bringing my own Pens flag and putting it up above Foley’s if all else fails.

Foley’s was rocking last night. There were about 30 people. Right before the game i got a twit from @ZPAwoman who told me her friend Steve is in town from Pittsburgh and was planning on visiting Foleys. After extensive search for Steve at Foleys which basically consisted of 3 guys yelling out Steve to every male that walked into the bar. Mission was finally accomplished and Steve was found! He had a great time and recommended that his friend Enzo comes to visit on Tuesday night. We will be sure to keep our eyes open for Enzo as well!

Another amazing performance by Pens last night. My beard was itchy as hell which is a great indication that Pens were going to do some magic on ice. Game definitely had that Out For Justice feel. Crosby sucks …

Poni open with a huge goal which took him back all they way to 2004 when he scored his first career NHL playoff goal. He was so stocked to score he couldn’t believe it and it got him going for the rest of the game. He was pretty much everywhere going nuts and believing.

Soon after i saw red fill up Evgeni Malkin’s eyes and my itchy beard was going nuts. I knew he was going to come out swinging hard. With Maxy Talby back on his line they put Sens name to the test and Sens failed. Geno 3rd goal of the playoff of Max with a huge assist to put the puck on Geno’s stick with wide open net.

Favorite part of the game was Billy G on the breakaway. Dad scores! Minutes later … Brooks Orpik was like … hey i want to do that too! Would have been huge but 4-2 is good enough to make Sens get their golf clubs polished.

Anyone else saw two hits on Letang’s unprotected sex hair. Somehow i got the feeling that there were plenty of Pens fans that enjoyed those hits more than Sens fans. Go figure. Anyway about Kris Letang. I know i know just keep breathing.

Recently there surfaced a video of Kris Letang giving interview in French and showing off his new tattoo that he got over the Olympic break. Here it is:

I am no French expert so i asked my friend Vanessa V an awesome French Canadian girl who plays better hockey than you to translate it for me. In the beginning of the interview Kris talks about going back to Montreal to see his family. He also says the team (Penguins) is doing well, that the boys are working hard and that there’s no feel of a Stanley Cup hangover.

Then he goes on to talk and show his tattoo. Check out his new ink pics.

Top portion of the tattoo is dedicated to his grandmother. Kris says that she always has been there for him.

Bottom portion of the tattoo and the guitar part is obviously dedicated to Letang’s best friend and former roommate Luc Bourdon who used to play for Vancouver Canucks and tragically died in a motorcycle accident on May 29, 2008. During the 2008 NHL Draft, the Canucks’ management wore guitar pins to remember Bourdon, because he was an avid guitarist.

Vanessa also adds that Kris has definitely not forgotten where he was from – makes her very proud.

At Unreal.

Poni Another Tenk? Penguins Meet “Buffalo Hat” Guy!

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

As you already know some exciting news just hours before the trade deadline. Ray Shero traded top prospect Luca Caputi and defenseman Martin Skoula for left winger Alexei Ponikarovsky. He is commonly referred to by his teammates as “The Poni Express” , “The Ukraine Train” or simply “Poni”. We head over to PSAMP to get answer to a question thats on tip of everyones tongue: “Can Penguins and Ponies live in harmony?” His answer was … “Hey man they have on my blog for about 3 years now.”

On this note we continue. While Shero might still get some criticism on putting end to Luca Caputi rap album which was scheduled to be released just weeks before the trade, at the end of the day its what you get for your buck, right? So what do Pens get? When Ponikarovsky was heavily scouted in the January and weeks before the Olympics i have read some peoples opinions that stated Poni is going to be just another Ruslan Fedotenko. I can understand losing Skoula but is losing top prospect Luca Caputi for a rental Poni really worth it? Only time will tell. For now i’d like to compare the two players. Now Poni is Ukranian that much him and Tenk have in common. They both look cute when they were young…

Young Ruslan Fedotenko …

7 year old Alexei Ponikarovsky …

Lets look at the number comparisons:

Ruslan Fedotenko:

Age: 31
Date of birth: January 18, 1979
Place of birth: Kiev, USSR (now Ukraine)
Ht: 6-2 Wt: 195
Shoots: L
Salary: $ 1,800,000
NHL Seasons: 8

Alexei Ponikarovsky:

Age: 29
Date of birth: April 09, 1980
Place of birth: Kiev, USSR (now Ukraine)
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 220
Shoots: L
Salary: $ 2,500,000
NHL Seasons: 8

Pretty similar so far. Alexei definitely has the size advantage but how he is going to use it in front of the net is another question.
