RECAP: Yeah. We Got That. PENS WIN. Source: The Pensblog
The Pens are skating wounded. They have been since February 2011, but now it's getting ridiculous. Ben Lovejoy's out. Michalek's out. Niskanen was out for this one. The Pens' blue line this game included two guys who haven't suited up for the Penguins all season. It's pretty impressive that there weren't any defensive breakdowns; it was actually a couple of bizarre turnovers that almost did the Penguins in. That and the relentless slashing and stickwork from the Kings. It was getting ridiculous. But the Pens persevered. Kunitz tied it in the shadow of the final buzzer and then he won it in the shootout. Chris Kunitz nowhere to be found in the 3 Stars of the game. Should be an interesting week coming up. Crosby rumors should be coming to a boiling point. These past two games have us addicted to Western Conference hockey, and thankfully the Dallas Stars are coming to town on Friday. Read More for the recap… T.K … The rest is here

Don’t know much about geography Source: The Pensblog
Over the weekend, the Internet exploded as word started to spread about an NHL realignment plan that is “gaining steam.” Here's what the divisions would look like: Some tidbits about the schedule: -Teams would play home-and-homes with teams outside their division, with the remaining being played within the division. No clue how the numbers break down on this, but it seems like 5 games a year against divisional opponents sounds about right. With those home-and-homes, teams would play either 44 or 46 games against non-divisional teams. That leaves basically half the schedule open to divisional games. Compare that to the 24 divisional games the Pens see every year in the current alignment. -The playoff seeding will return to how it was in the old days (before 1993-94), with the top 4 teams in each division seeded 1 to 4 and pairing down on a collision course with the other division in the Conference Finals. There is some dust being kicked up about this new playoff format, as teams in 8-team divisions feel like it's unfair. It'll be unfair in years that everyone is good. It'll be fair in the years when you get to pound on one extra team every year. Moot point … Go here to read the rest

CASE STUDY: Lovejoy vs. Engelland Source: The Pensblog
Ben Lovejoy vs. Deryk Engelland . Now that the blue-line corps is healthy and not in Shanny's Corner, Dan Bylsma is being forced to make his hardest decision on the early season. He's obviously going to flip-flop these two guys on a game-by-game basis this early in the season, but it doesn't have to be that way. One guy should get the nod, while the other waits for the former to commit a turnover that costs the Pens a game and then take his place. Niskanen isn't in this discussion because he has no business being in the discussion. We were gonna do some kind of mock trial-and-jury for this debate, except Internet bylaws state you can only parody A Few Good Men three times before you have to retire from the World Wide Web. Instead, we're just gonna lay out our case for both Ben Lovejoy and Deryk Engelland . There's a poll at the end of this post, and we'll also be having a one-hour radio show tonight dedicated solely to this Lovejoy vs. Engelland debate. Crosby will probably announce his comeback game or something, and it will derail our plans. But as for now, 8: 00pm to 9: 00pm on our radio station. All Lovejoy/ Engelland , all the time. Pittsburgh Penguins: Love Him or Hate Him; Matt Cooke Can Flat out Play Source: Bleacher Report
Rarely does anybody talk about the positives of a player like Matt Cooke. Since he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2008-2009 season, Cooke has been suspended multiple times for speculative play. Because of this, his value as a fine two-way hockey player goes overlooked. While I certainly do not advocate for his behavior, Matt Cooke serves a vital role as a member of the Penguins. So far this season, Cooke has scored three goals in his first four games and has been one of, if not the biggest reason, why the Sidney Crosby -less Penguins are off to a hot start. Cooke is a solid situational player, plays on the second or third line, and is a consistent penalty killer. If Cooke were ever available there would be quite a few teams in line to take a flier on him. Brendan Shanahan has been appointed the new sheriff in town for the NHL . He should be applauded for how he has handled headshots and dirty play thus far. Unfortunately for Cooke, this perhaps puts him more under the microscope than he was before (if that’s possible). As a repeat offender, he has little wiggle room with the NHL’s big brass, and if and when he does have another incident, there is no telling as to the length of his penalty. Depending on the severity of the infraction, his removal from the NHL is not out of the realm of possibility … Read this article
