Monday night, Pittsburgh Penguins fans such as myself held our collective breath, as, for the first time in 320 days, Sidney Crosby, the savior of the Penguins franchise, took the ice. I cannot provide hard-hitting statistics, citing the improvement in goals per shift, the increase in total team rating or whatever complex number ESPN comes up with next. The only statistics that matter are two goals and two assists in sixteen minutes. Crosby was everything fans had expected, dazzling everyone but himself with a move that reminded us all that we are all “Witnesses” to a loyal, level-headed, winning young player who could rewrite the record books. What we know for certain is that this game only added to the lore of Sid the Kid, and what we love is the fact that this team may be better than the 2009 Stanley Cup champion Pens that had Sid lift the Cup for the first time. For fans like myself who had looked at their collection of 87 jerseys in the closet with despair as rumors swirled that Crosby’s career may be at risk, Monday night was like Christmas morning a month early. He wasn't going to return until he was 115% ready. Sure, he has some conditioning to take care of. Sure, we won't see him on the penalty kill for a while, if ever, considering how the PK is doing so far this season. The Pens are skating wounded. They have been since February 2011, but now it's getting ridiculous. Ben Lovejoy's out. Michalek's out. Niskanen was out for this one. The Pens' blue line this game included two guys who haven't suited up for the Penguins all season. It's pretty impressive that there weren't any defensive breakdowns; it was actually a couple of bizarre turnovers that almost did the Penguins in. That and the relentless slashing and stickwork from the Kings. It was getting ridiculous. But the Pens persevered. Kunitz tied it in the shadow of the final buzzer and then he won it in the shootout. Chris Kunitz nowhere to be found in the 3 Stars of the game. Should be an interesting week coming up. Crosby rumors should be coming to a boiling point. Pens outshot the Caps, 41-19. 41 to 19. Games like that happen in the NHL. There's no reason to get bent out of shape about losing this game. It's the fifth game of the season. No one should start getting irrational till at least the 20-game mark. Plus, the Caps looked horrrrrrrrrible . Like, really bad. Their two goals in regulation came on a bizarre play by Mike Knuble and a lucky deflection. The Caps generated no offense at all. But it was the Tomas Vokoun Show. He made 39 saves while being peppered all night.
