Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Teams of the Early ’90s: Where Are They Now? Source: Bleacher Report
The Steelers of the 1970s are such an integral part of the Pittsburgh lexicon that those of us born after 1979 often felt deprived growing up. There was a sense that Pittsburgh’s days of sports glory had peaked and all that was left were the collective memories of a time we hadn’t lived through. Maybe that sounds a little dramatic, but even as a kid I was keenly aware of the disappointment that comes with showing up at a party just after the guest of honor leaves. The 1980s were particularly hard on the Pittsburgh region. After a decade of absolute dominance, the Steelers and the Pirates were both in sharp decline and the Penguins were an afterthought. The recession hit the region hard and residents were forced to watch the slow death of the industry that had literally defined them. To an entire generation of Burghers, the Penguins of the early 1990s were the Steelers of the ’70s. It was the first time we could create memories that would help get us through the tough years ahead as the city we love struggled to reinvent itself. It was a brief return to sports glory and proof that the Steel City’s best days weren’t behind it. If you have the smug desire to say “If you think he’s good…you shoulda seen Kevin Stevens in his prime” every time the Penguins call up a young winger and then instantly think to yourself “I wonder what he’s doing now”—this list is for you. What Is Wrong with Pittsburgh Penguins Marc-André Fleury? Source: Bleacher Report
Just what is going on with “Flower”? Marc-Andr Fleury is one of the more divisive players in the NHL today. Divisive not because of his personality or attitude, but because of his play. Fleury has never been a stats guy. He has not posted stellar save percentages. He has never wowed anyone with his GAA. However, the one department that Marc-Andr Fleury has nearly always impressed is in the win column. There are two camps in the MAF battle. The Critics/Haters, who have always believed that Fleury surrenders too many soft goals, and has been the beneficiary of playing with a talented cast of skaters. Then there are the Loyalists/Apologists. This group clings to the Stanley Cup runs, his incredible athleticism, Pittsburgh’s offensive-focused style of play and the “Secret Service Save.” Regardless to which camp you belong, Marc-Andr Fleury has begun the ’10-’11 season with a 1-4-0 record, a slightly scary 3.41 GAA, and an abysmal .861 save percentage. Why? … View post

Johnson Gets It Done.

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

Blogging on the run today! Testing out posting from my phone using this cool WordPress Blackberry application.

To be honest I haven’t seen the entire game since the pucking NHL can’t get their shit together and blocks all the local teams games on Center Ice package. This probably means I will miss games where NJ Devils, NY Rangers or NY Islanders are playing Pens. Its great, $180 bucks spent wisely I guess. I don’t care what NHL has to do to fix it, or whose Johnson they have to suck for this to get done but it needs to happen soon.
Its kind of sad to see Pens being in position where our best player on the team has first name starting with Alex and last name ending with Goligoski. I am glad that somebody is getting things done around here but everyone needs to step up their game.

Talking about getting things done of course we have to mention Massive Johnson. Another solid performance for Johnson and another win for Pens. Seems like CEC voodoo has been finally broken.

Of course its great to see your team win when its plagued by injuries. However there is a bigger issue than injuries looming over Pens management and its the goddamn powerplay. I mean its the same story as last year. Nothing has been addressed. At this point its a puzzle that nobody can solve. There should be a contest for whoever can come up with an idea on how to fix Pens powerplay the winner should get a million dollars and a chance to take Mike Yeo out for a romantic candlelight dinner.

Besides powerplay and injuries it seems like the NHL Refs are out to get Pens as well. Kris Letang was given a major penalty and was thrown out of the game due to a bad call by the refs. You get two majors and its an automatic game suspension. Pens are working on getting this call appealed and rescinded. I mean if it doesn’t get reversed he should at least get some points for his sex hair and pain plus suffering.

Notable mentions go out to Rupp and Tangradi.

Playing Flyers is going to be a mess tonight! I just hope Pens win so I have something to talk about with my Philly-born-and-raised-manager during my annual evaluation.

Let’s Go Pens!
