Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins: 6 Things To Watch for the Penguins Source: Bleacher Report
Tuesday night’s home opener saw the Pittsburgh Penguins remaining undefeated in regulation time. The 4-2 victory may not be remembered at season’s end, but two points will always be important. Pittsburgh Penguins: Love Him or Hate Him; Matt Cooke Can Flat out Play Source: Bleacher Report
Rarely does anybody talk about the positives of a player like Matt Cooke. Since he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2008-2009 season, Cooke has been suspended multiple times for speculative play. Because of this, his value as a fine two-way hockey player goes overlooked. While I certainly do not advocate for his behavior, Matt Cooke serves a vital role as a member of the Penguins. So far this season, Cooke has scored three goals in his first four games and has been one of, if not the biggest reason, why the Sidney Crosby -less Penguins are off to a hot start. Cooke is a solid situational player, plays on the second or third line, and is a consistent penalty killer. If Cooke were ever available there would be quite a few teams in line to take a flier on him. Brendan Shanahan has been appointed the new sheriff in town for the NHL . He should be applauded for how he has handled headshots and dirty play thus far. Unfortunately for Cooke, this perhaps puts him more under the microscope than he was before (if that’s possible). As a repeat offender, he has little wiggle room with the NHL’s big brass, and if and when he does have another incident, there is no telling as to the length of his penalty. Depending on the severity of the infraction, his removal from the NHL is not out of the realm of possibility … Read this article

Steeltown Lockdown: Pittsburgh Penguins Ride Defense To Winning Streak Source: Bleacher Report
With Sidney Crosby riding a 12-game scoring streak to the top of the NHL scoring race and the once-sluggish power play gulping espresso, the Pittsburgh Penguins ‘ current six-game streak could be easily attributed to the manifestation of offensive might. The Penguins —with the combination of Crosby, former scoring champion Evgeni Malkin, rapidly improving Jordan Staal and offensively-gifted defensemen Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski—were expected to burn out a few bulbs on the scoreboard this season … Follow this link

RECAP: He Goes, They Go. PENS WIN. Source: The Pensblog
It took a while, but the Pens were finally able to solve Kiprusoff, who had the potential to be an enormous pain in the ass. The line combinations are finally beginning to all gel on the same night. And the Pens have given up only 4 goals total in the past 4 games. We don't like getting too high or too low during an NHL season, but, shit, it feels like the Pens didn't play like this at any point during the season last year, so there's reason to be pumped as balls. Is Eric Tangradi Ready To Play for the Pittsburgh Penguins? Source: Bleacher Report
When Penguins GM Ray Shero traded Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forwards Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi in February of 2009, a lot of NHL analysts claimed that Shero made off like a bandit. A top-six forward and a highly rated forward prospect in exchange for a top-four defensemen, sounds familiar doesn’t it? That was what Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke was rumored to be looking to get in exchange for Tomas Kaberle this past summer. Chris Kunitz proved that maybe an even swap could have been a sufficient enough deal. Look at how he contributed to the Penguins’ Stanley Cup Championship in 2009. Once Kunitz was traded to Pittsburgh, he managed to accumulate 18 points (7-11-18) in 20 games in the regular season. He then posted 14 points (1-13-14) in 24 playoff games before lifting the Stanley Cup. … Read more here

Penguins Bipolar Disorder

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Games like tonight cause psychological disorders. After a bipolar game of hits and misses, from trailing by 2, to leading by 2, to finding ourselves clinging to a 1 goal lead on the PK with 2 minutes left of the game, the Pens came out on top with a final score of 5-4.

Letestu scored his first NHL goal early in the 1st to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. Buffalo answered back with 2 quick goals and returned in the 2nd to score yet again and take the 3-1 lead.

Pittsburgh wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. Crosby responded minutes later on the PP, followed by a long anticipated goal by Jordan Staal which tied the score at 3. After an extended period of 4 on 4 hockey Bing decided to show off by racking up two more goals within the period for his 5th career hatty. Crosby is now tied with Marleau for the NHL lead in goals.

God that guy sucks.
